The Tanḵẖānāmā (tun-khaa-naamaah), or “Manual of Penalties for Infringement of the Sikh Disciple”, was written by Anandpur Sahib Darbar poet Bhai Nand Lal Ji Goya, sometime after the unveiling of the Khalsa Panth in 1699. Written in the old Braj vernacular, the composition follows the theme of the composer, Bhai Nand Lal Ji, engaging in dialogue with the 10th Nanak Guru Gobind Singh Sahib - with discussion revolving around sanctions for those Sikhs initiated into the Khalsa fold who commit misconduct and therefore, breach the code. Tankha, originating from the Farsi (Persian) word tankhah (تنخواه), meaning reward or profit, in the Sikh sphere has now taken the opposite definition: meaning punishment. Although the penalties are meant for Amritdhari Sikhs, those Sikh men and women who were initiated by the Khande di Pahul ceremony, many Sikhs in general strive to live up to the principles shared in the Tankhanama. Breaching of the conduct is considered one having committed kurehit - misconduct, and is therefore subject to punishment. It is said that Guru Gobind Singh Sahib himself was once punished by his Guru Khalsa Panth initiates as he saluted the tomb of the Saint Dadu by firing an arrow. Argued for having been a display of grave worship, the Guru subsequently willingly accepted said punishment.*

This presentation of the Tankhanama is derived from 2 Puratan Pothis (Old Manuscripts) digitized by the Panjab Digital Library. Both Pothis were meticulously read and transcribed electronically by The Curator. The results from both Pothis were then analyzed with the Tankhanamas available online by iGurbani, SearchGurbani and another print publication. There were several discrepancies, most dealing with the placements of various vowels and spelling variations. At times however, entire lines present in the Pothis were missing online. The Ranneeti presentation online merged the findings from both Pothis and was then cross-referenced between the three aforementioned online publications. Both Pothis themselves had vowel and consonant differences. As the Tankhanama is in the old Braj language, it seems one Pothi mostly retained this structure, while the other was suited for the Panjabi reader. The presentation here prioritized the Braj spelling in Gurmukhi. The following translation is derived from the same iGurbani, SearchGurbani and Basics of Sikhi seen online. It is unknown exactly whose translation this is. The Ranneeti translation is modernized, and Gurmat concepts are highlighted for the reader. Each verse is given a brief exegesis, whenever needed. Underlined words are specific term definitions from the root Gurmukhi.

ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹਨਾਮਾ ਭਾਈ ਨੰਦ ਲਾਲ ਗੋਯਾ ਜੀ ਵਲੋਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਬ੍ਰਜ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ।, ਜੋ ਦਸਵੇਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਕਵੀ ਸਨ। ਇਹ 1699 ਵਿਚ ਵਿਸਾਖੀ ਦੇ ਦਿਨ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਪੰਥ ਦੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸੰਚਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਸਮੇਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹਨਾਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਈ ਨੰਦ ਲਾਲ ਜੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਲਗੀਧਰ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਧਾਰੀ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਕੁਰਹਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹ (ਸਜ਼ਾ) ਬਾਰੇ ਸਮਝਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
‘ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹ’ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ ਬੋਲੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ। ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ ਵਿਚ ‘ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹ’ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਇਨਾਮ ਜਾਂ ਲਾਭ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰਮਤ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਉਲਟ ਹੈ — ਯਾਨੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ।
ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹਨਾਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਦਰਜ ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹਵਾਂ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਧਾਰੀ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਲਈ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਕਈ ਸਹਜਧਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਕੇਸਧਾਰੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਵੀ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਪੰਥ ਵਲੋਂ ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ। ਸੰਤ ਦਾਦੂ ਦੀ ਕਬਰ ਦੇ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਲੰਘਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਆਦਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਤੀਰ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਸੀ। ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਨਾਲ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਖਾਲਸਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਬਰ-ਪੂਜਾ ਮੰਨ ਕੇ ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਦਸਮੇਸ਼ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਨਿਮਰਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਇਥੇ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹਨਾਮਾ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਚੀਨ ਪੋਥੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ “ਪੰਜਾਬ ਡਿਜਿਟਲ ਲਾਇਬ੍ਰੇਰੀ” ਵਲੋਂ ਆਨਲਾਈਨ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਦੋਵੇਂ ਪੋਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਲਿਖਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਇਹ ਨਤੀਜੇ “iGurbani”, “SearchGurbani” ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਮੂਲ ਛਾਪ ਵਿਚ ਉਪਲਬਧ ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹਨਾਮਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਲਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ।
ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲਗਾਂ, ਅੱਖਰਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਸ਼ਬਦ-ਰੂਪਾਂ (ਲਿਪੀ) ਦੀ ਲਿਖਤ ਵਿਚ ਕਈ ਗਲਤੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਫਰਕ ਪਾਏ ਗਏ। ਕੁਝ ਪੰਕਤੀਆਂ ਅਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਸਨ ਜੋ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਪੋਥੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਤਾਂ ਸਨ ਪਰ ਆਨਲਾਈਨ ਰੂਪਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀਆਂ।
ਇੱਥੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹਨਾਮਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਨਤੀਜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇੱਕ ਪੋਥੀ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਬ੍ਰਜ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜਦਕਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਪਾਠਕ ਲਈ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਇੱਥੇ ਬ੍ਰਜ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਰੂਪ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
تنخاہناما بھائی نند لال گویا جی ولوں لکھیا گیا سی برج بھاشا وچّ۔، جو دسویں نانک گرو گوبند سنگھ ساہب دے انندپر ساہب دربار دے اکّ کوی سن۔ اہ 1699 وچ وساکھی دے دن خالسا پنتھ دے امرت سنچار توں کجھ سمیں بائد لکھیا گیا سی۔
تنخاہناما وچ بھائی نند لال جی گرو گوبند سنگھ ساہب نال گلبات کردے ہن۔ اس وچ کلغیدھر پاتشاہ امرتدھاری خالسا سکھاں ولوں کرہت کرن دی تنخواہ (سزا) بارے سمجھاؤندے ہن۔
‘تنخواہ’ شبد فارسی بولی وچوں آیا ہے۔ فارسی وچ ‘تنخواہ’ دا ارتھ انام جاں لابھ ہندا ہے۔ پر سکھّ گرمت انوسار، تنخواہ دا ارتھ اس دے الٹ ہے — یانی سزا۔
تنخاہناما وچ درز تنخاہواں امرتدھاری خالسا سکھاں لئی ہن، پر کئی سہجدھاری تے کیسدھاری سکھّ وی اس دی پالنا کرن دی کوشش کردے ہن۔
کہا جاندا ہے کِ گرو گوبند سنگھ ساہب جی نے خد وی اکّ وار گرو خالسا پنتھ ولوں تنخواہ سویکار کیتی سی۔ سنت دادو دی کبر دے کولوں لنگھدے سمیں گرو ساہب نے آدر وجوں اکّ تیر چلایا سی۔ گرو جی نال موجود خالسیاں نے اس نوں کبر-پوجا منّ کے تنخواہ دتا۔ دسمیش پتا جی نے نمرتا نال اہ تنخواہ سویکار کیتی۔
اتھے سانجھا کیتا گیا تنخاہناما دے دو پراچین پوتھیاں توں پراپت کیتا گیا ہے، جنھاں نوں “پنجاب ڈجٹل لائبریری” ولوں آنلائین سانجھا کیتا گیا سی۔ دوویں پوتھیاں نوں پڑھ کے لکھت کیتا گیا۔ اس توں بائد اہ نتیجے “iGurbani”, “SearchGurbani” اتے اکّ ہور مول چھاپ وچ اپلبدھ تنخاہنامیاں نال تلنا کیتی گئی۔
انھاں وچ لگاں، اکھرآں اتے وکھّ-وکھّ شبد-روپاں (لپی) دی لکھت وچ کئی غلتیاں تے فرک پائے گئے۔ کجھ پنکتیاں اجہیاں وی سن جو پرانے پوتھیاں وچ تاں سن پر آنلائین روپاں وچ نہیں ملدیاں۔
اتھے دتا تنخاہناما سارے نتیجیاں نوں اکٹھا کرکے تیار کیتا گیا ہے۔ اکّ پوتھی پراتن برج بھاشا انوسار ہے، جدکِ دوجی پنجابی پاٹھک لئی بنایا گیا سی۔ اتھے برج بھاشا والا روپ سانجھا کیتا گیا ہے۔
