ਕਲਿ ਕਲਵਾਲੀ ਕਾਮੁ ਮਦੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਪੀਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
کلِ کلوالی کامُ مدُ منوآ پیونہارُ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The Dark Age of Kali Yuga is the vessel, filled with the wine of sexual desire; the mind is the drunkard.
(Manmohan Singh): The Dark age is the vessel filled with the wine of lust and the mind is the tippler.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Kaliyuga is the vat, lust the wine; the mind the boozer.
(Darshan Singh): In dark age, the container is full with the intoxicants like cupidity, the mind is set to drink.
(Gurbachan Singh Makin): 0 Brother ! In this age of Kal Yug, our bad deeds constitute the mud, the interest in sexual desires is the wine and the distracted mind is the individual taking wine.
ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕਟੋਰੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਭਰੀ ਪੀਲਾਵਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
کرودھ کٹوری موہِ بھری پیلاوا اہنکارُ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Anger is the cup, filled with emotional attachment, and egotism is the server.
(Manmohan Singh): Wrath is the cup, filled Wrath is the cup, filled with worldly love and pride is the server.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): With wrath is the cup by attachment filled; pride the cup-bearer.
(Darshan Singh): The container of anger is full with greed, the ego is set to drink.
(Gurbachan Singh Makin): Anger could be compared to the mug or glass, and the wine is contained in the vessel of worldly attachments, while egoism is like the individual who offers wine.
ਮਜਲਸ ਕੂੜੇ ਲਬ ਕੀ ਪੀ ਪੀ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥
مجلس کوڑے لب کی پی پی ہوئ کھوارُ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Drinking too much in the company of falsehood and greed, one is ruined.
(Manmohan Singh): Through excessive drinking in the company of falsehood and avarice the mortal is ruined.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): In circle of false avarice, those thus boozing forfeit all honour.
(Darshan Singh): The drinking party is of liars and greedy, they drink and are set to suffer.
(Gurbachan Singh Makin): Then such a person is engrossed in the company of falsehood and greed; where one suffers disrespect due to excessive drinking.
ਕਰਣੀ ਲਾਹਣਿ ਸਤੁ ਗੁੜੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
کرنی لاہنِ ستُ گڑُ سچُ سرا کرِ سارُ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): So let good deeds be your distillery, and Truth your molasses; in this way, make the most excellent wine of Truth.
(Manmohan Singh): Let good deeds be thy still, truth thy molasses and therewith make thou the sublime wine of the True Name.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Make good deeds and truth the molasses, thus the wine of truth thou distil.
(Darshan Singh): Let the pot be of your actions, Jaggery be of truth, the prepared wine be of sublime essence.
(Gurbachan Singh Makin): As opposed to it, even good actions could form the mud (Earth), speaking Truth is like adding solid sugar (Gur) and then the wine would consist of caring for the Lord’s True Name.
ਗੁਣ ਮੰਡੇ ਕਰਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਘਿਉ ਸਰਮੁ ਮਾਸੁ ਆਹਾਰੁ ॥
گن منڈے کرِ سیلُ گھیو سرمُ ماسُ آہارُ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Make virtue your bread, good conduct the ghee, and modesty the meat to eat.
(Manmohan Singh): Make virtue thy thin loaves civility thy clarified butter and modesty thy meat to eat.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Make good qualities the pan-cakes, good conduct the ghee, modesty the dish of flesh.
(Darshan Singh): Let the bread be of virtues, the ghee be of character, and the eating of meat be of modesty.
(Gurbachan Singh Makin): Then for a Guru-minded drunkard virtuous deeds are like the ghee to be added, and then feeling shy of one’s actions is like meat eating.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਖਾਧੈ ਜਾਹਿ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥੧॥
گرمکھِ پائیئ نانکا کھادھے جاہِ بکار ۔۔۱۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): As Gurmukh, these are obtained, O Nanak; partaking of them, one’s sins depart. ||1||
(Manmohan Singh): Such delicacies, O Nanak, are obtained through the Guru, by partaking which, the sins depart.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): These dishes, saith Nanak, by the Master’s guidance are obtained, by whose consumption evil-thinking vanishes. (1)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “Let this be gotten by Gurmukh, eating which the ill-intentions will vanish.” 1
(Gurbachan Singh Makin): O Nanak! The Guru-minded persons partake of this kind of wine and meat, which could dispel all vices and sins. (1)

ਕਾਇਆ ਲਾਹਣਿ ਆਪੁ ਮਦੁ ਮਜਲਸ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਧਾਤੁ ॥
کایا لاہنِ آپُ مدُ مجلس ترسنا دھاتُ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The human body is the vat, self-conceit is the wine, and desire is the company of drinking buddies.
(Manmohan Singh): The human body is the vat, self conceit the wine and the society is of the mammonish desires.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): The body is the vat, ego the wine; restless desire the boozers’ circle.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Your body the still, your ego the wine and your company the fire of desire,
(Darshan Singh): The body is fragmentation, ego is wine, lust is material for wine-party.
(Gurbachan Singh Makin): This body is like Earth, egoism is the wine, and the chasing of worldly acquisitions is the company of drunkards.

ਮਨਸਾ ਕਟੋਰੀ ਕੂੜਿ ਭਰੀ ਪੀਲਾਏ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ॥
منسا کٹوری کوڑِ بھری پیلائے جمکالُ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The cup of the mind’s longing is overflowing with falsehood, and the Messenger of Death is the cup-bearer.
(Manmohan Singh): The cup of mind’s longings is full to brim with falsehood and Death’s courier is the cup-bearer.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Passion the cup falsehood-filled, that Yama, agent of death is doling out.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Your cup of falsehood full of temptations, you quaff until you expire.
(Darshan Singh): The cup is of desires, is filled with lies, the devil of death (the maid) is to offer for drinking.
(Gurbachan Singh Makin): The Cup consists of worldly desires, the vessel is full of falsehood and the Yama encourages one to drink wine.
(Anmol Singh Rode):
ਇਤੁ ਮਦਿ ਪੀਤੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਖਟੀਅਹਿ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
اتُ مدِ پیتے نانکا بہتے کھٹیئہِ بکار ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Drinking in this wine, O Nanak, one takes on countless sins and corruptions.
(Manmohan Singh): By drinking this wine, O Nanak, the mortal earns multiple sins.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak; By drinking such wine are numerous sins earned.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Says Nanak, drinking a wine like this, it is only misdeeds that you acquire.
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “Drinking such a wine, brings lot of evil thoughts.”
(Gurbachan Singh Makin): . 0 Nanak ! This type of wine generates vicious thoughts, whereas the real type of wine should be like this:
(Anmol Singh Rode):
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੁੜੁ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਮੰਡੇ ਭਉ ਮਾਸੁ ਆਹਾਰੁ ॥
گیانُ گڑُ سالاہ منڈے بھؤ ماسُ آہارُ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): So make spiritual wisdom your molasses, the Praise of God your bread, and the Fear of God the meat you eat.
(Manmohan Singh): Make gnosis thy molasses, praise of God thy bread and the Lord’s fear thy meat to eat.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Make enlightenment the molasses, Divine laudation the pancakes, Fear of God the dish of flesh.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): With enlightenment as sweet, laudation as bread, and the Lord’s fear as your dish of meat,
(Darshan Singh): If Gurh (Jaggery) is of knowledge, bread is of praise, meat to eat is of (His) fear.
(Gurbachan Singh Makin): The enlightenment due to Lord's knowledge constitutes the solid sugar, the praises of the Lord forms the small eats, and meat eating would consist of developing wonder-awe of the Lord.
(Anmol Singh Rode):
ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
نانک اہُ بھوجنُ سچُ ہے سچُ نامُ آدھارُ ۔۔۲۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): O Nanak, this is the true food; let the True Name be your only Support. ||2||
(Manmohan Singh): Nanak, this is the true (spiritual) food, whereby the True Name shall become thy prop.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak : Seeking prop of the holy Name is this the feast of truth. (2)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Such a meal, says Nanak, is nourishing with True Name as your sire (2)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “This food is pure, prepared in true name.” 2
(Gurbachan Singh Makin): O Nanak! Man should partake of the food of Lord’s True Name forming the mainstay in life. (2)
(Anmol Singh Rode):
ਕਾਂਯਾਂ ਲਾਹਣਿ ਆਪੁ ਮਦੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਧਾਰ ॥
کانیاں لاہنِ آپُ مدُ امرت تس کی دھار ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): If the human body is the vat, and self-realization is the wine, then a stream of Ambrosial Nectar is produced.
(Manmohan Singh): If body be the vat and self-realisation the wine, then the Name-Nectar becomes the stream thereof.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Make the boy the vat; of the ego make wine, which in stream of amrita pours.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Your body as the still, your ego as wine and with Amrit as distillation fine.
(Darshan Singh): If body is fermentation, soul is wine, and stream is of nectar.
(Gurbachan Singh Makin): This body is the Earth, the egoism is the wine, speaking a sweet language would amount to the nectar of True Name,
(Anmol Singh Rode):
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲਾਪੁ ਹੋਇ ਲਿਵ ਕਟੋਰੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਰੀ ਪੀ ਪੀ ਕਟਹਿ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥੩॥
ستسنگتِ سیو میلاپُ ہوئ لو کٹوری امرت بھری پی پی کٹہِ بکار ۔۔۳۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Meeting with the Society of the Saints, the cup of the Lord’s Love is filled with this Ambrosial Nectar; drinking it in, one’s corruptions and sins are wiped away. ||3||
(Manmohan Singh): By meeting with the saints society, the cup of Lord’s love is filled with the Name-Nectar. By drinking it continually the sins are blotted out.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): In unison with holy company, with cup of devotion quaff cupfuls of amrita — By such quaffing is annulled evil-thinking. (3)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Drinking in the cup of devotion in the company of the holy pulls you from evil deeds mire. (3)
(Darshan Singh): If one joins the congregation of true, the cup of love is filled with nectar. Then drinking this, the evil intentions will end. 3
(Gurbachan Singh Makin): flowing in a stream and the cup is full of the True Name in the form of uniting with the company of holy saints, and getting imbued with the love of the Lord; and drinking this wine would cut down all vicious thoughts. (3)
