ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
اکُ اوئنکارُ ستگر پرسادِ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
(Manmohan Singh): There is but One God. By the True Guru’s grace He is obtained.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): In the Name of the Sole Supreme Being, Realized by the holy Preceptor’s Grace
(Kartar Singh Duggal): There is but One God. He is realised through the grace of the True Guru.
(Darshan Singh): God is one, realized by the grace of true Guru.
ਕਰਪੂਰ ਪੁਹਪ ਸੁਗੰਧਾ ਪਰਸ ਮਾਨੁਖੵ ਦੇਹੰ ਮਲੀਣੰ ॥
کرپور پہپ سگندھا پرس مانکھی دیہں ملینں ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Camphor, flowers and perfume become contaminated, by coming into contact with the human body.
(Manmohan Singh): Camphor, flowers and perfumes become filthy by coming in contact with the human body.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Camphor, roses and other fragrant substances by touching the human body are fouled.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Camphor and fragrant flowers with the touch of man get fouled.
(Darshan Singh): The smell of the camphor-flowers, when contacts a human body, pollutes,
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Camphor, flowers, and perfumes become impure by touching man’s body.
ਮਜਾ ਰੁਧਿਰ ਦ੍ਰੁਗੰਧਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਥਿ ਗਰਬੇਣ ਅਗੵਾਨਣੋ ॥੧॥
مزا ردھر درگندھا نانک اتھِ گربین اگیاننو ۔۔۱۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): O Nanak, the ignorant one is proud of his foul-smelling marrow, blood and bones. ||1||
(Manmohan Singh): The unwise one is proud of marrow, blood, foul odour and bones.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): The body of foul-smelling marrow, blood is made up, yet ignorant man of it is proud. (1)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Man’s marrow and blood make for foul smell, and yet the ignorant man of it is proud. (1)
(Darshan Singh): yet the foolish one is proud of his marrow, blood and bones, though they smell foul. 1
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, the ignorant are proud of the fat, blood, foul odours, and bones of which their bodies are composed. 1
ਪਰਮਾਣੋ ਪਰਜੰਤ ਆਕਾਸਹ ਦੀਪ ਲੋਅ ਸਿਖੰਡਣਹ ॥
پرمانو پرجنت آکاسہ دیپ لوء سکھنڈنہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Even if the mortal could reduce himself to the size of an atom, and shoot through the ethers,
(Manmohan Singh): If by becoming subtle like an atom one crosses through the firmament, continents, the worlds and its regions,
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Should man reducing himself to an atom, over skies, countries and continents
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Assuming the might of atom should man fly over skies, countries and continents.
(Darshan Singh): You may have a subtle body like an atom, and may spread light in the sphere of skies.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Were man to traverse with his eye the sky, the continents, the worlds,
ਗਛੇਣ ਨੈਣ ਭਾਰੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਧੂ ਨ ਸਿਧੵਤੇ ॥੨॥
گچھین نین بھارین نانک بنا سادھو ن سدھیتے ۔۔۲۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Worlds and realms in the blink of an eye, O Nanak, without the Holy Saint, he shall not be saved. ||2||
(Manmohan Singh): in the twinkling of an eye; even then, O Nanak, he is emancipated not without the saint.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): In the twinkling of an eye wander, saith Nanak, without guidance of the holy finds he not liberation. (2)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): He may wander in the twinkling of an eye. Without guidance of the holy, says Nanak, liberation is not for him meant. (2)
(Darshan Singh): There you may travel, through them, like the twinkle of an eye. Nanak says, “But nothing can be achieved, without the help of saints.” 2
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): And its regions even to the smallest particle thereof, O Nanak, nothing could be obtained without the saint. 2

ਜਾਣੋ ਸਤਿ ਹੋਵੰਤੋ ਮਰਣੋ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਣ ਮਿਥਿਆ ॥
جانو ستِ ہوونتو مرنو درسٹین متھیا ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Know for sure that death will come; whatever is seen is false.
(Manmohan Singh): Know if for certain that death is true and all that is seen is perishable.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Know death to be a fact; false is whatever is visible.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Death is a reality, false is whatever else you scan.
(Darshan Singh): Know, this truth that death is a fact, and whatever is seen, is transient.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Know that death is real, and everything else that appeareth is unreal.
ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਾਥਿ ਚਲੰਥੋ ਭਣੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ॥੩॥
کیرتِ ساتھِ چلنتھو بھننتِ نانک سادھ سنگین ۔۔۳۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): So chant the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; this alone shall go along with you in the end. ||3||
(Manmohan Singh): Recite thou the Lord’s praise in the society of the saints, O Nanak this alone shall go with thee.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak: Divine laudation sung in company of the holy alone shall accompany man. (3)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Says Nanak, laudation of the Lord in the company of the holy alone does accompany man. (3)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “Two things will accompany, one, participation in congregation of saints, second, the praise of God.” 3
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): God’s praise, saith Nanak, which is obtained by association with the saints shall alone accompany us. 3

ਮਾਯਾ ਚਿਤ ਭਰਮੇਣ ਇਸਟ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੇਖੁ ਬਾਂਧਵਹ ॥
مایا چت بھرمین اسٹ متریکھُ باندھوہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The consciousness wanders lost in Maya, attached to friends and relatives.
(Manmohan Singh): The mind seeks after riches, the loved friends and kinsmen.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Maya by fixing man’s mind among loved ones, friends and relations has deluded him.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Maya has deluded man in the form of attachment with the loved, friends and relatives.
(Darshan Singh): The mind runs for pleasure of money and, of relations like friend, kin, deity.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): The mind wandereth to mammon, lovers, friends, and relations.
ਲਬਧੵੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਅਸਥਾਨੰ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਭਜਣੰ ॥੪॥
لبدھنی سادھ سنگین نانک سکھ استھانں گوپال بھجنں ۔۔۴۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Vibrating and meditating on the Lord of the Universe in the Saadh Sangat, O Nanak, the eternal place of rest is found. ||4||
(Manmohan Singh): Contemplating God, the Word-Cherisher, in the saints’ society, O Nanak, the eternal place of rest is obtained.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak: By devotion to God in company of the holy is attained the abode of joy. (4)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Says Nanak, by devotion to God in the company of holy, is obtained the poise for devotion. (4)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “But the genuine pleasures are found, from the place of saint’s congregation, and the recitation of God.” 4
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, the abode of happiness which consisteth in worshipping God is obtained by association with the saints. 4
ਮੈਲਾਗਰ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਨਿੰਮੁ ਬਿਰਖ ਸਿ ਚੰਦਨਹ ॥
میلاگر سنگین نمُ برکھ سِ چندنہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The lowly nim tree, growing near the sandalwood tree, becomes just like the sandalwood tree.
(Manmohan Singh): Associating of sandal, the tree of Azadirachta indica too becomes as sandal.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Low trees growing close to sandalwood turn sandalwood themselves.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Small plants grown near sandalwood tree become sandalwood;
(Darshan Singh): The tree of Margosa, beside the tree of sandal, becomes sandal.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): The nim-tree by association with sandal becometh as sandal,
ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬਸੰਤੋ ਬਾਂਸੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਹੰ ਬੁਧਿ ਨ ਬੋਹਤੇ ॥੫॥
نکٹِ بسنتو بانسو نانک اہں بدھِ ن بوہتے ۔۔۵۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): But the bamboo tree, also growing near it, does not pick up its fragrance; it is too tall and proud. ||5||
(Manmohan Singh): The bamboo also dwells near, however, being arrogantly minded it is perfumed not, O Nanak.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Yet the bamboo abiding dose to it, saith Nanak, by its egoism of height is not fragrant made. (5)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): But close to it bamboo because of its height in ego fails to be fragrant. (5)
(Darshan Singh): But the bamboo, even being beside (sandal), with arrogant mind, cannot give fragrance. 5
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, while the bamboo, even though it dwelleth near, is not perfumed through its pride. 5
ਗਾਥਾ ਗੁੰਫ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕਥੰ ਮਥੰ ਮਾਨ ਮਰਦਨਹ ॥
گاتھا گنپھ گوپال کتھں متھں مان مردنہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): In this Gaat’haa, the Lord’s Sermon is woven; listening to it, pride is crushed.
(Manmohan Singh): In this Gatha dialect (God’s gospel) is weaved the wisdom, reflecting over which one’s ego is crushed.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): By discoursing and contemplation of the utterance embodying Divine laudation is smashed pride.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): By the arrow of God’s Name shot, pride is curbed by discoursing and meditating,
(Darshan Singh): In this narration (Gatha) of God, is wrapped the praise of God, whoever applies mind, can overcome his ego.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): By repeating and reflecting on the discourse in which God’s name is interwoven, pride is effaced.

ਹਤੰ ਪੰਚ ਸਤ੍ਰੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਾਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਣਹ ॥੬॥
ہتں پنچ سترین نانک ہرِ بانے پرہارنہ ۔۔۶۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The five enemies are killed, O Nanak, by shooting the Arrow of the Lord. ||6||
(Manmohan Singh): By charging the arrows of God’s Name, O Nanak, the five enemies are slain.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): The five foes saith Nanak, by the arrows of God’s Name are destroyed. (6)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Says Nanak, and the five enemies are distraught. (6)
(Darshan Singh): The five foes shall be killed. Nanak says, “With the arrows of God, they (five) are defeated.” 6
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, by letting fly the arrow of God’s name the five enemies are destroyed. 6

ਬਚਨ ਸਾਧ ਸੁਖ ਪੰਥਾ ਲਹੰਥਾ ਬਡ ਕਰਮਣਹ ॥
بچن سادھ سکھ پنتھا لہنتھا بڈ کرمنہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The Words of the Holy are the path of peace. They are obtained by good karma.
(Manmohan Singh): The saint’s words are the paths of peace. They are obtained by good destiny.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): The words of the holy are the path of joy; by great good fortune are these attained.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Word of the holy leads to the path of peace. It is obtained by great good fortune.
(Darshan Singh): The words of saints are path to happiness, but are blessed by His grace.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): The word of the saint is the path of peace; it is obtained by greatly meritorious deeds.
ਰਹੰਤਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣੇਨ ਰਮਣੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨਹ ॥੭॥
رہنتا جنم مرنین رمنں نانک ہرِ کیرتنہ ۔۔۷۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The cycle of birth and death is ended, O Nanak, singing the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises. ||7||
(Manmohan Singh): Reciting the Lord’s praises, one’s coming and goings are ended.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak: By uttering Divine laudation is man from transmigration freed. (7)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): It frees from transmigration, and man takes to meditation and laudation. (7)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “By singing the praise of God, one’s cycle of birth and death is ceased.” 7
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, there is no transmigration for him who uttereth God’s praises. 7
ਪਤ੍ਰ ਭੁਰਿਜੇਣ ਝੜੀਯੰ ਨਹ ਜੜੀਅੰ ਪੇਡ ਸੰਪਤਾ ॥
پتر بھرجین جھڑییں نہ جڑیئں پیڈ سمپتا ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): When the leaves wither and fall, they cannot be attached to the branch again.
(Manmohan Singh): when leaves wither and fall, they can attach not again to the tree branch.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): As are withering leaves shed, and again to the tree’s wealth of branches are not attached;
(Kartar Singh Duggal): As leaves wither and are shed, are not restored to the tree’s branch,
(Darshan Singh): Once the leaves wither and fall, they cannot again be cleaved with the branch of tree.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Wlren leaves wither and fall, they return not again to the tree.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਣ ਬਿਖਮਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਹੰਤਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਬਾਸਰੋ ਰੈਣੀ ॥੮॥
نام بہون بکھمتا نانک بہنتِ جونِ باسرو رینی ۔۔۸۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O Nanak, there is misery and suffering. The mortal wanders in reincarnation day and night. ||8||
(Manmohan Singh): Nanak, without the Name, there is suffering and day and night one wanders in species.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Thus saith Nanak, one without the Name in tormenting births day and night wanders. (8)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): One devoid of Name, says Nanak, is ever tortured, of liberation has no chance. (8)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “Those without name are in trouble, day and night they pass through womb.” 8
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, without the Name there is suffering; man’s days and nights pass in transmigration. 8
ਭਾਵਨੀ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਲਭੰਤੰ ਬਡ ਭਾਗਣਹ ॥
بھاونی سادھ سنگین لبھنتں بڈ بھاگنہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): One is blessed with love for the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, by great good fortune.
(Manmohan Singh): Through great good fortune, one is blessed with the love for the saints’ society.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Devotion in holy company by great good fortune is attained.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Loving devotion is obtained in the holy company, with great good fortune.
(Darshan Singh): The love for the congregation of saints, is blessed with the great fortune.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): The very fortunate who love the association of saints obtain God.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਰਮਣੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਹ ਬਿਆਪਣਹ ॥੯॥
ہرِ نام گن رمنں نانک سنسار ساغر نہ بیاپنہ ۔۔۹۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Whoever sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord’s Name, O Nanak, is not affected by the world-ocean. ||9||
(Manmohan Singh): Whosoever recites God’s Name and praises, him, the world ocean affects not, O Nanak.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak: In the way of those uttering Divine laudation the ocean of the world appears not. (9)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Meditating and lauding, says Nanak, the ocean of life appears to be in tune. (9)
(Darshan Singh): Those who recite attributes of the name of God. Nanak says, “They do not drown in world ocean.” 9
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, he who repeateth God’s name and praises returneth not to the ocean of the world. 9
ਗਾਥਾ ਗੂੜ ਅਪਾਰੰ ਸਮਝਣੰ ਬਿਰਲਾ ਜਨਹ ॥
گاتھا گوڑ اپارں سمجھنں برلا جنہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): This Gaat’haa is profound and infinite; how rare are those who understand it.
(Manmohan Singh): Profound and infinite is the gospel of the Lord. Rare is the one who understands it.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): The Lord’s deep limitless laudation the rare among human beings can understand.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Gatha is deep and profound, few are those who do study.
(Darshan Singh): This narration is very deep and serious, very rare one can understand it.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Discourses on God are profound and endless, and few are there who understand them.
S.S. Bhatia, The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism): a discourse, profound and inexhaustible,
ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕਾਮ ਤਜਣੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਰਮਣੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਮਹ ॥੧੦॥
سنسار کام تجنں نانک گوبند رمنں سادھ سنگمہ ۔۔۱۰۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): They forsake sexual desire and worldly love, O Nanak, and praise the Lord in the Saadh Sangat. ||10||
(Manmohan Singh): They who understand it, O Nanak, abandon worldly love and recite the World-Lord’s praises in the society of the saints.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Discarded is worldly desire, saith Nanak, as in holy company is the Lord contemplated. (10)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): It entails discarding of worldly desires, says Nanak. And meditating on the Lord in the company holy. (10)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “For this one has to withdraw, from worldly occupations, and recite God in the congregation of saints.” 10
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): They who understand them, Nanak, abandon worldly desires, and repeat God’s name in the company of saints. 10
(S.S. Bhatia, The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism): and one which if comprehended truly leads one to overcome worldly desires and to repeat God's Name in the company of the holy (10)
ਸੁਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਧ ਬਚਨਾ ਕੋਟਿ ਦੋਖ ਬਿਨਾਸਨਹ ॥
سمنتر سادھ بچنا کوٹِ دوکھ بناسنہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The Words of the Holy are the most sublime Mantra. They eradicate millions of sinful mistakes.
(Manmohan Singh): The saint’s word is the sublime spell. Through it millions of sins are eradicated.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Noble incantation of words of the holy a million sins destroys.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): The holy spell uttered by godmen, a million sins ameliorate.
(Darshan Singh): Remember God in the words of saints, it finishes with crores of sorrows.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): The saint’s word is the prime spell; through it millions of sins are blotted out:
ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਧੵਾਨੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੁਲ ਸਮੂਹ ਉਧਾਰਣਹ ॥੧੧॥
ہرِ چرن کمل دھیانں نانک کل سموہ ادھارنہ ۔۔۱۱۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Meditating on the Lotus Feet of the Lord, O Nanak, all one’s generations are saved. ||11||
(Manmohan Singh): Meditating on the God’s lotus feet, O Nanak, all the generations are saved.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak: Meditation on the Divine lotus feet to man’s entire family brings liberation. (11)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Meditating on the Lord’s Lotus Feet, says Nanak, the entire clan liberates. (11)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “Rush to be at the lotus-feet of God, that will liberate your whole family.” 11
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, by meditating on God’s lotus feet whole families are saved. 11
ਸੁੰਦਰ ਮੰਦਰ ਸੈਣਹ ਜੇਣ ਮਧੵ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨਹ ॥
سندر مندر سینہ جین مدھی کیرتنہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): That palace is beautiful, in which the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises are sung.
(Manmohan Singh): Beauteous is that palace, in which the Lord’s praises are sung.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Beautiful is the temple wherein is sung Divine laudation.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Attractive is the shrine where laudation is ordained.
(Darshan Singh): That home is beautiful, in which God’s praise is sung.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Beautiful is that temple in which God’s praises are sung.
ਮੁਕਤੇ ਰਮਣ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧੵੰ ਬਡ ਭਾਗਣਹ ॥੧੨॥
مکتے رمن گوبندہ نانک لبدھنی بڈ بھاگنہ ۔۔۱۲۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Those who dwell on the Lord of the Universe are liberated. O Nanak, only the most fortunate are so blessed. ||12||
(Manmohan Singh): They who recite the Lord’s Name are emancipated. O Nanak; the very fortunate ones alone are blessed with this state.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Those contemplating the Lord are liberated; saith Nanak: This by great good fortune is attained. (12)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Those who contemplate are liberated, says Nanak, with great good fortune are they attained. (12)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “Reciting God are liberated, but this is blessed with great fortune.” 12
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, the utterance of God’s name, which only the fortunate obtain, affordeth deliverance. 12
ਹਰਿ ਲਬਧੋ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਮਿਤੋ ॥
ہرِ لبدھو متر سمتو ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): I have found the Lord, my Friend, my very Best Friend.
(Manmohan Singh): I have found God as my friend, yea, my good friend,
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Attained is the noble friend, the Lord,
(Kartar Singh Duggal): I have attained a noble friend in the Lord,
(Darshan Singh): Let me find my friend, dear friend.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): The true friends, the saints,
ਬਿਦਾਰਣ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚਿਤੋ ॥
بدارن کدے ن چتو ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): He shall never break my heart.
(Manmohan Singh): and He breaks not my heart ever.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Who breaks not heart of any.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Who never breaks the heart.
(Darshan Singh): He will not break my heart.

ਜਾ ਕਾ ਅਸਥਲੁ ਤੋਲੁ ਅਮਿਤੋ ॥
جا کا استھلُ تولُ امتو ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): His dwelling is eternal; His weight cannot be weighed.
(Manmohan Singh): He, whose abode and weight are unweighable,
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Limitless is His abode and extent.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Whose abode is limitless in the world,
(Darshan Singh): God is one, whose base is balanced and infinite.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak hath made Him whose abode and greatness are immeasurable, the companion of his soul.
ਸੋੁਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਖਾ ਜੀਅ ਸੰਗਿ ਕਿਤੋ ॥੧੩॥
سوئی نانک سکھا جیء سنگِ کتو ۔۔۱۳۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Nanak has made Him the Friend of his soul. ||13||
(Manmohan Singh): him alone Nanak has made the friend of his heart.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Nanak has made Him his being’s friend. (13)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Nanak cherishes in Him a comrade. (13)
(Darshan Singh): One who is having Him in heart is friend of Nanak. 13

ਅਪਜਸੰ ਮਿਟੰਤ ਸਤ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਹ ॥
اپجسں مٹنت ست پترہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): One’s bad reputation is erased by a true son,
(Manmohan Singh): Ill-repute is effaced by the true son,
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): By the birth of a noble son is effaced the family’s ignominy,
(Kartar Singh Duggal): The way birth of a worthy son relieves of ignominy,
(Darshan Singh): Truthful sons, wipe out the defame,
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Dishonour is effaced by a good son,
ਸਿਮਰਤਬੵ ਰਿਦੈ ਗੁਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਣਹ ॥
سمرتبی ردے گر منترنہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Who meditates in his heart on the Guru’s Mantra.
(Manmohan Singh): who in his mind contemplates the Guru’s word.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): So also by contemplation in heart of the Master’s Word.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Repeating the Guru’s spell in the hearts cavity,
(Darshan Singh): they remember the dictum of Guru in mind.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Who remembereth in his heart the Guru’s spell.
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਅਚੁਤ ॥
پریتم بھگوان اچت ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The Beloved Eternal Lord God,
(Manmohan Singh): The loved Imperishable Lord,
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): By contemplation of the beloved, eternal Lord.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): And meditating on the Eternal Lord,
(Darshan Singh): God, imperishable is my love.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਤਾਰਣਹ ॥੧੪॥
نانک سنسار ساغر تارنہ ۔۔۱۴۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): O Nanak, carries us across the world-ocean. ||14||
(Manmohan Singh): O Nanak, ferries man across the world ocean.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak, man swims across ocean of the world. (14)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Says Nanak, the ocean of life can one ferry. (14)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak is to swim across the world ocean. 14

مرنں بسرنں گوبندہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): It is death to forget the Lord of the Universe.
(Manmohan Singh): To forget the World-Lord is one’s death.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Forgetfulness of the Lord is true death;
(Kartar Singh Duggal): It is death forgetting the Lord.
(Darshan Singh): Forgetting God, is to die.

ਜੀਵਣੰ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਧੵਾਵਣਹ ॥
جیونں ہرِ نام دھیاونہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): It is life to meditate on the Name of the Lord.
(Manmohan Singh): To contemplate the God’s Name is one’s life.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Meditation of the Name Divine is life.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Remembering Him is living a life in accord.
(Darshan Singh): Remembering God, is to live.

ਲਭਣੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ॥
لبھنں سادھ سنگین ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The Lord is found in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy,
(Manmohan Singh): God is obtained by associating with the saints,
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): This, saith Nanak, by the Primally recorded writ in holy company is attained. (15)¹
(Kartar Singh Duggal): In the holy company is He imbibed,
(Darshan Singh): Finding a congregation of saints,

(Sant Singh Khalsa): O Nanak, by pre-ordained destiny. ||15||
(Manmohan Singh): By virtue of the primal writ, O Nanak.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): This, saith Nanak, by the Primally recorded writ in holy company is attained. (15)¹
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Says Nanak, if in the Time Primal it has been inscribed. (15)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “It is possible, if God has preordained.” 15

ਦਸਨ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਭੁਯੰਗੰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੰ ਗਾਰੁੜੀ ਨਿਵਾਰੰ ॥
دسن بہون بھینگں منترں گارڑی نوارں ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The snake-charmer, by his spell, neutralizes the poison and leaves the snake without fangs.
(Manmohan Singh): As the snake charmer, by his spell renders the serpent poisonless and without teeth,
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): As by the serpent-healer’s incantation is the snake rendered fangless and the poison cast out,
(Kartar Singh Duggal): The way at a serpent healer’s spell, the serpent becomes fangless and its poison is shed,
(Darshan Singh): Like a snake charmer, with his dictum, removesthe teeth and draws out thepoison of the serpent.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): As the spell of the snake-charmer draweth the fangs of the serpent.
ਬੵਾਧਿ ਉਪਾੜਣ ਸੰਤੰ ॥
بیادھِ اپاڑن سنتں ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Just so, the Saints remove suffering;
(Manmohan Singh): the same way the saints remove misery,
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): So do the holy efface the mind’s maladies:
(Kartar Singh Duggal): So do the holy efface the mind’s maladies.
(Darshan Singh): Same way the saints remove hurdles.

ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧ ਕਰਮਣਹ ॥੧੬॥
نانک لبدھ کرمنہ ۔۔۱۶۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): O Nanak, they are found by good karma. ||16||
(Manmohan Singh): but they are found by good fortune.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): These, saith Nanak, by good fortune are found. (16)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): To such, says Nanak, by good luck is one led. (16)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “They are found with great luck.” 6

ਜਥ ਕਥ ਰਮਣੰ ਸਰਣੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਅਣਹ ॥
جتھ کتھ رمنں سرنں سربتر جیئنہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The Lord is All-pervading everywhere; He gives Sanctuary to all living beings.
(Manmohan Singh): The Lord is pervading every-where and gives refuge to all the being.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): The Lord pervasive everywhere, of all beings is refuge.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): The Lord pervades all over and provides shelter to every one
(Darshan Singh): God is pervading all places and is giving refuge to all persons.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): God pervadeth every place and giveth shelter to all souls;
ਤਥ ਲਗਣੰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਨਕ ॥
تتھ لگنں پریم نانک ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The mind is touched by His Love, O Nanak,
(Manmohan Singh): O Nanak, man’s mind is touched with His love,
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak: Love for Him
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Says Nanak, one comes to love Him,
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “The love of God is blessed,
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, His love toucheth the heart when the Guru extendeth his favour and showeth himself.
ਪਰਸਾਦੰ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸਨਹ ॥੧੭॥
پرسادں گر درسنہ ۔۔۱۷۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): By Guru’s Grace, and the Blessed Vision of His Darshan. ||17||
(Manmohan Singh): by virtue of the Guru’s grace and vision.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): by grace by the Master’s sight arises. (17)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): When one has by His grace glimpse of the Lord-in-Person. (17)
(Darshan Singh): when Guru’s grace is seen (blessed).” 17

ਚਰਣਾਰਬਿੰਦ ਮਨ ਬਿਧੵੰ ॥
چرناربند من بدھنی ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): My mind is pierced through by the Lord’s Lotus Feet.
(Manmohan Singh): My mind is deeply affected with the Lord’s lotus feet,
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): As the heart by the Divine: lotus feet is pierced,
(Kartar Singh Duggal): As the heart is pierced with His Lotus Feet,
(Darshan Singh): The lotus-feet (God) has pierced my mind.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): When God’s lotus feet cleave the heart,
ਸਿਧੵੰ ਸਰਬ ਕੁਸਲਣਹ ॥
سدھنی سرب کسلنہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): I am blessed with total happiness.
(Manmohan Singh): and I am blessed with all the joys.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Attained is all weal.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Peace prevails all over.
(Darshan Singh): All pleasures are now available.

ਗਾਥਾ ਗਾਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਬੵੰ ਪਰਾ ਪੂਰਬਣਹ ॥੧੮॥
گاتھا گاونتِ نانک بھبنی پرا پوربنہ ۔۔۱۸۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Holy people have been singing this Gaat’haa, O Nanak, since the very beginning of time. ||18||
(Manmohan Singh): From the ancient times, the pious persons have been singing God’s praise, O Nanak.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak: The noble spirits from Primal Time Divine laudation sing. (18)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Says Nanak, the noble souls chant His praises ever. (18)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “The respectable elders, since times, are singing His narration.” 18
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, from the most ancient times the happy saints sing God’s praises. 18

ਸੁਭ ਬਚਨ ਰਮਣੰ ਗਵਣੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਉਧਰਣਹ ॥
سبھ بچن رمنں گونں سادھ سنگین ادھرنہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Chanting and singing the Sublime Word of God in the Saadh Sangat, mortals are saved from the world-ocean.
(Manmohan Singh): By reciting and singing the sublime word of the Guru in the association of saints,
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): To discourse on the pure Word, to sing it in holy company brings liberation.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Uttering soulful words from the tongue, and chanting in the holy company gains liberation.
(Darshan Singh): In the congregation of saints, reciting and singing sacred words, are liberated.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): They who utter instructive words and walk with the saints shall be saved:
ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮ ਨ ਲਭੵਤੇ ॥੧੯॥
سنسار ساگرں نانک پنرپِ جنم ن لبھیتے ۔۔۱۹۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): O Nanak, they shall never again be consigned to reincarnation. ||19||
(Manmohan Singh): man should cross the world ocean, O Nanak. This human life he shall obtain not again.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak: Thus is swum the ocean of existence—then occurs no more transmigration. (19)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): One swims across the ocean of life, says Nanak, one is free from transmigration. (19)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “They swim across the world ocean, and are not born again.” 19
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): In the ocean of the world, Nanak, they shall not again obtain birth. 19
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੀਚਾਰੰ ॥
بید پران ساستر بیچارں ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): People contemplate the Vedas, Puraanas and Shaastras.
(Manmohan Singh): Men give thought to the Vedas, the Puranas and the Shashtras.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Those that contemplating scriptures
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Those who contemplate the Vedas and Shastras,
(Darshan Singh): Some are pondering over Vedas, Puranas, Shastras.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Men may study the Veds, the Purans, and the Shastars,
ਏਕੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਮ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੰ ॥
ایکنکار نام ار دھارں ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): But by enshrining in their hearts the Naam, the Name of the One and Only Creator of the Universe,
(Manmohan Singh): By enshrine the Name of One God in mind,
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): The Sole Name Divine in heart cherish,
(Kartar Singh Duggal): And have the Ik Onkar lodged in their heart’s quarter.
(Darshan Singh): Some are keeping name of God in mind.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): But it is the name of the one God that should be clasped to the heart.
ਕੁਲਹ ਸਮੂਹ ਸਗਲ ਉਧਾਰੰ ॥
کلہ سموہ سگل ادھارں ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Everyone can be saved.
(Manmohan Singh): one can save all the beings of one’s generation.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saved is their entire family.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Along with their clan, everyone they liberate,
(Darshan Singh): Some are liberating with their whole family.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): He who claspeth it to his heart saveth whole families.

ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋ ਤਾਰੰ ॥੨੦॥
بڈبھاگی نانک کو تارں ۔۔۲۰۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): By great good fortune, O Nanak, a few cross over like this. ||20||
(Manmohan Singh): O Nanak, a few very lucky ones cross over thiswise.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak: By great good fortune is a rare one saved. (20)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): By great good fortune, Nanak too is saved. (20)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “Such emancipated are fortunate ones.” 20
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, very fortunate are the few who can thus save. 20

ਸਿਮਰਣੰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮੰ ਉਧਰਣੰ ਕੁਲ ਸਮੂਹਣਹ ॥
سمرنں گوبند نامں ادھرنں کل سموہنہ ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Meditating in remembrance on the Naam, the Name of Lord of the Universe, all one’s generations are saved.
(Manmohan Singh): Contemplating the World-Lord’s Name, all the generations are saved.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): By contemplation of the Lord’s Name is one’s whole clan saved.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Meditation on the Lord’s Name saves the entire society.
(Darshan Singh): Remembering name of God, emancipate with their whole family.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, the remembrance of God’s name which saveth whole families.
ਲਬਧਿਅੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਭੇਟੰਤਿ ਦਰਸਨਹ ॥੨੧॥
لبدھئں سادھ سنگین نانک وڈبھاگی بھیٹنتِ درسنہ ۔۔۲۱۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): It is obtained in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. O Nanak, by great good fortune, the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is seen. ||21||
(Manmohan Singh): Associating with the saints, God’s meditation is obtained. By great good fortune is seen the Lord’s holy vision.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): This saith Nanak, in holy company is attained, whose sight by great good fortune is met. (21)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): It helps cultivate holy company, and those of great good fortune, says Nanak have a glimpse of the Deity. (21)
(Darshan Singh): They are searching for congregation of saints. Nanak says, “If greatly fortunate, they will find.” 21
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Is obtained by associating with saints, whom only the very fortunate behold. 21
ਸਰਬ ਦੋਖ ਪਰੰਤਿਆਗੀ ਸਰਬ ਧਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤਣਃ ॥
سرب دوکھ پرنتیاگی سرب دھرم درڑنتن: ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Abandon all your evil habits, and implant all Dharmic faith within.
(Manmohan Singh): The saint forsake all his sins and implants all faith within his mind.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): By discarding of all evils is confirmed in mind righteousness in all its aspects.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): You may eradicate all evils in you, you may as well every dharma imbue,
(Darshan Singh): They (saints) teach them wholesome religion, and remove all their sorrows.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): The saints remove all sin and implant all faith in the heart;
ਲਬਧੇਣਿ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖੵਣਃ ॥੨੨॥
لبدھینِ سادھ سنگینِ نانک مستکِ لکھین: ۔۔۲۲۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is obtained, O Nanak, by those who have such destiny written upon their foreheads. ||22||
(Manmohan Singh): They, on whose forehead it so writ, O Nanak, obtain the society of the saints.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak: This in the company of the holy is attained by the Writ inscribed on one’s forehead. (22)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): He is gained only in the holy company, or if it has been inscribed in your forehead by the Divine Entity. (22)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “Such congregation of saints is found, if preordained.” 22
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, they on whose foreheads it is so written obtain association with them. 22
ਹੋਯੋ ਹੈ ਹੋਵੰਤੋ ਹਰਣ ਭਰਣ ਸੰਪੂਰਣਃ ॥
ہویو ہے ہوونتو ہرن بھرن سمپورن: ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): God was, is, and shall always be. He sustains and destroys all.
(Manmohan Singh): The Lord was, is and shall ever He sustains and destroys all.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): The Lord who destroys and creates, has existed in the past, is present now and shall ever be.
(Kartar Singh Duggal): He Who makes and unmakes, He was there, He is here and will be.
(Darshan Singh): God is, He shall be, He is competent to create and withdraw.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): God was, is, and shall be; it is He who destroyeth and createth all things.
ਸਾਧੂ ਸਤਮ ਜਾਣੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਾਰਣੰ ॥੨੩॥
سادھو ستم جانو نانک پریتِ کارنں ۔۔۲۳۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Know that these Holy people are true, O Nanak; they are in love with the Lord. ||23||
(Manmohan Singh): O Nanak, know thee the saints to be true, for, they bear love to their Lord.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak: Know it finmly tha1t devotion to Him through the holy arises. (23)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Says Nanak, try to understand the truth, His devotion is cultivated through the holy. (23)
(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “Know that saints are truthful, because they love Him (God).” 23
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, know for certain that holy men are the cause of God’s love.
ਸੁਖੇਣ ਬੈਣ ਰਤਨੰ ਰਚਨੰ ਕਸੁੰਭ ਰੰਗਣਃ ॥
سکھین بین رتنں رچنں کسمبھ رنگن: ۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): The mortal is engrossed in sweet words and transitory pleasures which shall soon fade away.
(Manmohan Singh): Mortal loves not the Guru’s word, which bestows bliss, is absorbed in saf-flower dye.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Those immersed in pleasures ofthe flesh that are frail like kasumbha,
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Those given to worldly pleasures like alluring words' of harlots and riches, they are like kasumba flowers,
(Darshan Singh): The pleasure-giving words seem like gems, but their shine is only like that of safflowers.
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Man loveth not the Word which conferreth happiness; he is attached to fleeting things like the safflower dye;
ਰੋਗ ਸੋਗ ਬਿਓਗੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਸੁਪਨਹ ॥੨੪॥
روگ سوگ بیوگں نانک سکھُ ن سپنہ ۔۔۲۴۔۔
(Sant Singh Khalsa): Disease, sorrow and separation afflict him; O Nanak, he never finds peace, even in dreams. ||24||
(Manmohan Singh): Disease, sorrow and separation befall him, O Nanak and he obtains not peace even in dream.
(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak, are prey to maladies, suffering and alienation, and have joy not even in dream. (24)
(Kartar Singh Duggal): Leading to maladies, sufferings and estrangement. Says Nanak, they have peace not even in their sleeping hour. (24)
(Darshan Singh): They dispense sorrows and ailments. Nanak says, “No happiness for them even in dreams.” 24
(Max Arthur Macauliffe): Nanak, he obtaineth not spiritual happiness even in a dream; disease, sorrow, and separation from God are his portion. 24
