اکُ اوئنکارُ ستگر پرسادِ ۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

(Manmohan Singh): There is but One God, By the True Guru’s grace, He is attained.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): In the Name of the Sale Supreme Being, Realized by the holy Preceptor’s Grace

(Darshan Singh): God is one, realized by the grace of true Guru.

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): By the Grace of the Lord-Sublime, Truth personified & attainable through the Guru’s guidance.

ਨਉ ਸਤ ਚਉਦਹ ਤੀਨਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਹਲਤਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਬਹਾਲੀ ॥

نؤ ست چؤدہ تینِ چارِ کرِ مہلتِ چارِ بہالی ۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): The nine regions, the seven continents, the fourteen worlds, the three qualities and the four ages - You established them all through the four sources of creation, and You seated them in Your mansions.

(Manmohan Singh): Establishing the nine regions, seven continents, fourteen worlds three qualities, four ages and the four sources of creation, the Lord has seated them all in His mansion.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): The Nine continents, seven lands, fourteen worlds, three qualities, Four Yugas, hast Thou created. And through four processes of birth in the Mansion of the universe hast these settled.

(Kartar Singh Duggal): Having established nine planets, seven seas, fourteen continents, three spheres and four ages as brands, God seated the four species of Creation in His mansion,

(Darshan Singh): O! God, you have created nine, seven, Fourteen, three, four let them sit in your home.

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): O Lord! You have created this Universe comprising nine regions (Khand), seven Islands, fourteen countries, four Yugas, and the three-pronged Maya (worldly falsehood of lust for power, greed and peace) and this sort of world is spread out in all the four corners.

(Anmol Singh Rode): The 9 Regions, 7 Islands and Seas, 14 Worlds, 3 Realms and 4 Ages The Lord have moulded through the 4 Sources of Creation — The Lord has seated them in His Manor.

ਚਾਰੇ ਦੀਵੇ ਚਹੁ ਹਥਿ ਦੀਏ ਏਕਾ ਏਕਾ ਵਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

چارے دیوے چہُ ہتھِ دیئے ایکا ایکا واری ۔۔۱۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): He placed the four lamps, one by one, into the hands of the four ages. ||1||

(Manmohan Singh): He put the four lamps one by one into the hands of the four ages.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): In turn hast Thou granted it the Four Vedas for lamps, and the chariots of the four Yugas. (1)

(Kartar Singh Duggal): Giving four lamps in their hands, one lamp in each hand. (1)

(Darshan Singh): Four lamps one by one, you placed on four hands. 1

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): Then the four Vedas like the four lamps are providing enlightenment and knowledge in the four ages. (1)

(Anmol Singh Rode): 4 Divas [Candle-Lamps; Vedas] The Lord has placed into 4 Hands [Ages], one by one. ॥1॥

ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨ ਮਧੁਸੂਦਨ ਮਾਧੌ ਐਸੀ ਸਕਤਿ ਤੁਮੑਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

مہروان مدھسودن مادھو ایسی سکتِ تماری ۔۔۱۔۔ رہاؤ ۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): O Merciful Lord, Destroyer of demons, Lord of Lakshmi, such is Your Power - Your Shakti. ||1||Pause||

(Manmohan Singh): O my merciful Master, the slayer of Madh demon and the Lord of Lakhshmi, such is Thine power. Pause.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Gracious Lord, destroyer of evil-doers, Lord of felicity, such is Your might. (I-Pause)

(Kartar Singh Duggal): O my Merciful, Madhusudan, Madho, such is Your passion grand! (1) Refrain

(Darshan Singh): O! merciful, my sweet heart, such is your power. 1 (pause)

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): O Lord-benefactor! You possess such a might and power so that it could destroy the egoism of man. (Pause-1)

ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਲਸਕਰੁ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਸਿਕਦਾਰੀ ॥

گھرِ گھرِ لسکرُ پاوکُ تیرا دھرمُ کرے سکداری ۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): Your army is the fire in the home of each and every heart. And Dharma - righteous living is the ruling chieftain.

(Manmohan Singh): The fire in every home is Thy army and righteousness exercises chieftainship.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): In each being is Thy light that is Thy host—Dharma is appointed its chief.

(Kartar Singh Duggal): The light in every home is Your physical force, while your righteousness the ruler.

(Darshan Singh): In every home, (body) fire (light) is your army, your religion is ruling.

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): O Lord! All the beings possess the energy of fire within themselves whereas the god of justice, Dharam Raj, is always at Your beck and call.

(Anmol Singh Rode): This fiery Power resides in every home of Your Army — Dharam–Righteous and Faithful Conduct is The Siqdari–Chief.

ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇਗ ਮਿਲੈ ਇਕ ਵੇਰਾ ਭਾਗੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

دھرتی دیگ ملے اک ویرا بھاگُ تیرا بھنڈاری ۔۔۲۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): The earth is Your great cooking pot; Your beings receive their portions only once. Destiny is Your gate-keeper. ||2||

(Manmohan Singh): The earth is Thy big cooking-pot and the being receive it but once. Destiny is Thy store-keeper.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): The earth is the couldron from which a portion to each is assigned once for all; Destiny is Thy dispenser of largesse. (2)

(Kartar Singh Duggal): The earth is an all-time cooking cauldron and destiny Your storekeeper. (2)

(Darshan Singh): The earth is a cooking vessel, everyone gets but once. O! Distributor, this is your given luck. 2

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): The whole Earth is like a big kettle providing food for all (the fortune of all human beings is written once for all along with their actions) and everyone gets his share according to his actions as per Your Will. (2)

(Anmol Singh Rode): The Earth is Your Degh–Cauldron-Kettle and all receive their fair serving once — Destiny is the Storekeeper. ॥2॥

ਨਾ ਸਾਬੂਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਮੰਗੈ ਨਾਰਦੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥

نا سابورُ ہووے پھرِ منگے ناردُ کرے خواری ۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): But the mortal becomes unsatisfied, and begs for more; his fickle mind brings him disgrace.

(Manmohan Singh): Becoming non-content, man begs again and the mercurial mind humiliates him.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Man discontented asks for more—His restless mind bringing him ignominy.

(Kartar Singh Duggal): The discontented asks for more and more, the eclectic humiliation meet.

(Darshan Singh): One is never contented, begs again and again, thus Nard (mind) creates troubles.

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): The person, who is seeking more and more of worldly possessions, without being contented, has to face disgust following the variations of his wavering mind.

(Anmol Singh Rode): But the human is always unsatisfied, begs for more and more — such a mindset brings them constant disgrace.

ਲਬੁ ਅਧੇਰਾ ਬੰਦੀਖਾਨਾ ਅਉਗਣ ਪੈਰਿ ਲੁਹਾਰੀ ॥੩॥

لبُ ادھیرا بندی خانا اؤگن پیرِ لہاری ۔۔۳۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): Greed is the dark dungeon, and demerits are the shackles on his feet. ||3||

(Manmohan Singh): Avarice is the dark dungeon and the demerits are the fetters on the feet.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Greed is the dark dungeon; evil qualities fetters on the feet. (3)

(Kartar Singh Duggal): Avarice is the dark dungeon, evil deeds with fetters on the feet. (3)

(Darshan Singh): Greed is dark jail, and vices are iron-chains, fettering the legs. 3

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): The human beings are thrown in the blind and dark jail with their vicious thoughts and sinful actions as the fetters of bondage. (3)

(Anmol Singh Rode): Greed is the dark prison and demerits are the iron feet shackles. ॥3॥

ਪੂੰਜੀ ਮਾਰ ਪਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਮੁਦਗਰ ਪਾਪੁ ਕਰੇ ਕੋੁਟਵਾਰੀ ॥

پونجی مار پوے نت مدگر پاپُ کرے کوٹواری ۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): His wealth constantly batters him, and sin acts as the police officer.

(Manmohan Singh): Wealth ever beats the soul with its mallet and sin does the duty of a police officer.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): What he gains is constant blows of the mace; His sin the prefect of police administering chastizement.

(Kartar Singh Duggal): The love of riches is like the blows of a mallet; the sins acting as watchmen,

(Darshan Singh): The wealth becomes a weapon (Mudgar), it beats every day, and sin acts as chief of police.

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): O Lord! Depending upon the actions of each individual, forming his capital investment, the individual gets punished accordingly, being caught due to his sinful actions.

(Anmol Singh Rode): Their wealth beats them as a baton always strikes one — sins are the Police Captain.

ਭਾਵੈ ਚੰਗਾ ਭਾਵੈ ਮੰਦਾ ਜੈਸੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੁਮੑਾਰੀ ॥੪॥

بھاوے چنگا بھاوے مندا جیسی ندرِ تماری ۔۔۴۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): Whether the mortal is good or bad, he is as You look upon him, O Lord. ||4||

(Manmohan Singh): Whether good, whether bad; the man is, as Thou look upon him, O Lord.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Lord! Man is good or bad as be Your glance over him. (4)

(Kartar Singh Duggal): Good or bad, are what You make them. (4)

(Darshan Singh): One may be good or bad, he is how you look at him. 4

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): But all this happens as per Your Will and Your Grace and individuals become virtuous or sinners. (4)

(Anmol Singh Rode): Whether one is good or bad, the mortal is as You watch them. ॥4॥

ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਉ ਅਲਹੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੇਖਾਂ ਆਈ ਵਾਰੀ ॥

آدِ پرکھ کؤ الہُ کہیئ سیکھاں آئی واری ۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): The Primal Lord God is called Allah. The Shaykh’s turn has now come.

(Manmohan Singh): The Primal Lord is called Allah, The Turn the Muslim divines has come.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): The Primal Supreme Being is now known as Allah—This is the age of the Muslim divines.

(Kartar Singh Duggal): The Primal Lord is called Allah these days; it is the age of Sheikh’s hold.

(Darshan Singh): The Primal Purakh is called Allah, now is the turn of Sheikhs.

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): Now the Lord-Creator is named as Allah, and in this age of Kalyug the dictates of Sheikhs (Muslim rulers) are to be obeyed by all,

(Anmol Singh Rode): Aad Purakh–The Primal Lord is now referred to as Allah — it is now the turn of the Sheikhs, the (foreign) Islamic sages.

ਦੇਵਲ ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਐਸੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਚਾਲੀ ॥੫॥

دیول دیوتیا کرُ لاگا ایسی کیرتِ چالی ۔۔۵۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): The temples of the gods are subject to taxes; this is what it has come to. ||5||

(Manmohan Singh): Tax is levied on the temples of goods Such a practice has come into vogue.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Temples and deities of Hindus are taxed—such is the current practice. (5)

(Kartar Singh Duggal): The Hindu temples and their gods are taxed, such is the way of the world. (5)

(Darshan Singh): The temples of gods are levied tax, this has become the order of the day. 5

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): and a certain system of life is to be led when the followers of Hindu gods and goddesses are being taxed for their beliefs. (5)

(Anmol Singh Rode): The Deval–Temples of the Hindu Devi–Idols are taxed (via the immoral Jizya), this is what (degradation) it has come to. ॥5॥

ਕੂਜਾ ਬਾਂਗ ਨਿਵਾਜ ਮੁਸਲਾ ਨੀਲ ਰੂਪ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥

کوجا بانگ نواج مسلا نیل روپ بنواری ۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): The Muslim devotional pots, calls to prayer, prayers and prayer mats are everywhere; the Lord appears in blue robes.

(Manmohan Singh): The ablution-pots, calls to prayer, prayers and prayer-carpets are seen everywhere and the Lord appears in blue form.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Now is the age of the pitcher of Muhammadan ablution, the Muhammadan call to prayer, Namaz and its prayer-mat; The Lord now is figured as wearing blue.

(Kartar Singh Duggal): The ablution pot, the call to prayer and the prayer-mat, God has taken to garments blue.

(Darshan Singh): Small pot, mat for prayer, and call for prayer for five times a day, all are there. God is seen to wear blue dress.

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): O Lord! The human beings (following Islam) carry a utensil in hand for a wash, perform ablutions and spreading a sheet on the ground they say their prayers (in the Muslim fashion) and the person in blue clothes is considered superior to others.

(Anmol Singh Rode): The (foreign) Muslim Wudhu ablution pots, prayer mats and Navaaz (Salah)–Prayer Calls pervade everywhere — The Lord appears in the (foreign) Blue robes (of the Muslim Clerics).

ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮੀਆ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਜੀਆਂ ਬੋਲੀ ਅਵਰ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੬॥

گھرِ گھرِ میا سبھناں جیاں بولی اور تماری ۔۔۶۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): In each and every home, everyone uses Muslim greetings; your speech has changed, O people. ||6||

(Manmohan Singh): In every house all the persons say ‘Mian’, your language has become different, O men.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): In each home is each one addressed by the Muhammadan honorific of Mian—A strange lingo have you now adopted. (6)

(Kartar Singh Duggal): ‘Mian’ is how they address each other in every home, their language is altogether new. (6)

(Darshan Singh): In every home, for everyone, the way of address is ‘Mian,’ you have shifted to other language. 6

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): Now the language of individuals has also changed and all individuals are addressed as Mian. (6)

(Anmol Singh Rode): In each and every home, the greeting of ‘Mian’ (a foreign term for royalty) is said by all — O Folk! Your language is now different (foreign, non-indigenous). ॥6॥

ਜੇ ਤੂ ਮੀਰ ਮਹੀਪਤਿ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਉਣ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥

جے تو میر مہیپتِ ساہبُ کدرتِ کؤن ہماری ۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): You, O my Lord and Master, are the King of the earth; what power do I have to challenge You?

(Manmohan Singh): If Thou, O Lord, wish to appoint Mir Babar the King of earth; what power have I to challenge it?

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Thou that art Lord, Master of the earth, its overlord, what power have we?

(Kartar Singh Duggal): If You have become a Muslim, what about us?

(Darshan Singh): If you are a king, the Master of land, what is my power before you?

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): O True Master! If that is according to Your dictates as per Your Will, then what right have we got to alter these practices.

(Anmol Singh Rode): If You are the Mir–Sovereign, Mahipat Sahib–Master of The World, O Lord, then what power do we possess?

ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਟ ਸਲਾਮੁ ਕਰਹਿਗੇ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਤੁਮੑਾਰੀ ॥੭॥

چارے کنٹ سلامُ کرہگے گھرِ گھرِ سپھتِ تماری ۔۔۷۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): In the four directions, people bow in humble adoration to You; Your Praises are sung in each and every heart. ||7||

(Manmohan Singh): In the four directions the mortals make Thee obeisance and in every house Thine praises are sung, O Lord.

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Creatures in all four directions to Thee shall still make obeisance, in each home shall Your laudation be sung. (7)

(Kartar Singh Duggal): You will be salaamed from all the four quarters, your praises will be sung in every tenement. (7)

(Darshan Singh): People, in all the four directions, salute you, in every home, you are praised. 7

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): Now all the four comers of the world would salute You in the Muslim fashion and Your praises will be sung in each house as per their customs. (7)

(Anmol Singh Rode): In all 4 Directions, the people Salaam–Salute and Praise You in the (foreign) Islamic fashion — in each and every home You are Praised. ॥7॥

ਤੀਰਥ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਕਿਛੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਦਿਹਾੜੀ ॥

تیرتھ سمرتِ پنّ دان کچھُ لاہا ملے دہاڑی ۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): Making pilgrimages to sacred shrines, reading the Simritees and giving donations in charity - these do bring any profit.

(Manmohan Singh): The profit, which is obtained as wages from pilgrimages to shrines, reading of Simritis, and giving of alms and charities,

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): The gain got from bathing at holy spots, study of Simritis and dispensing charity,

(Kartar Singh Duggal): Going on pilgrimages, reading the Smritis and giving alms, may earn us something like a day’s wages.

(Darshan Singh): The conducting of pilgrimage, the reading of Simritis, giving charity, should give a profit (relief) for the day.

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): O Lord! By visiting holy places of pilgrimage, reading Smritis and giving alms to poor are the means to placate You and win acclaim in life.

(Anmol Singh Rode): Pilgrimages to Holy Sites, reading Simritis [Vedic Texts], giving alms and charity — perhaps some benefit from which may be earned like a daily wage.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮੇਕਾ ਘੜੀ ਸਮੑਾਲੀ ॥੮॥੧॥੮॥

نانک نامُ ملے وڈیائی میکا گھڑی سمالی ۔۔۸۔۔۱۔۔۸۔۔

(Sant Singh Khalsa): O Nanak, glorious greatness is obtained in an instant, remembering the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||8||1||8||

(Manmohan Singh): is gained in a moment by remembering the glory-bestowing Name, O Nanak!

(Gurbachan Singh Talib): Saith Nanak, comes by exaltation Through the Lord’s contemplation of an hour. (8 (1.8)

(Kartar Singh Duggal): Nanak was bestowed honour, remembering the Lord God just for a moment. (8) 1.8

(Darshan Singh): Nanak says, “Through name are laurels, even if one remembers for a moment.” 8.1.8

(Gurbachan Singh Makin): O Nanak! May I be blessed with Lord’s True Name as my great achievement so that I could recite Lord’s True Name every moment of life. (so as to attain salvation) (8-1-8)

(Anmol Singh Rode): (But) O Nanak, True Glory is gained, even for a moment, by remembering upon the Naam–The Name of The Lord. ॥8॥1॥8॥
